The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Disability grant remains a vital lifeline, providing financial relief to millions of individuals with permanent or temporary disabilities who are unfit for work, helping with essential medical costs.

From SASSA, Wednesday, 6 May 2026, is officially confirmed as disability grant payment date. On this particular day, recipients of the Disability Grant (DG), along with caregivers receiving the Care Dependency grant (CDG), will be paid for the month of May.
South African citizens, permanent residents, and refugees who apply for the SASSA disability grant will recieve financial support for May 2026, after their application is approved.
After the Disability Grant, SASSA has scheduled the Child Support grant payments for May 2026, providing households in need with financial support for the care of young children.
Note: Primary caregivers who lookafter minors under 18 with permanent disabilities can apply for a SASSA Care Dependency grant.
Receive Your Disability Grant Payment for May
Disability grant payments commence on 6 May at ATMs, retail partners, and Post Office (SAPO) branches. Beneficiaries using bank accounts will receive their grant money within 48 hours, once cleared by their bank.
SASSA confirms that funds remain in the account until withdrawn, so there is no need to rush or overcrowd pay points. Check your banking app or statement to confirm the deposit.
Those relying on other payment methods will receive an SMS notification to collect their grant at the nearest retail outlet, including Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Spar, and Boxer.
Important: Postbank is continuing with SASSA grant payouts while transitioning all remaining beneficiaries to the Postbank black cards.
Appeal for May Disability Grant Declined
You need to check your disability grant status for May 2026 on the SASSA website at sassas.co.za. Checking your SASSA status confirms whether your grant is approved, declined, or pending verification.
If your status shows declined for May, note the reason provided. The South African government gives you the right to submit an SASSA appeal if you believe the reason is invalid and you still meet the eligibility requirements for the SASSA grant.
All appeals for declined SASSA grants are reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) under the Department of Social Development. The tribunal’s decision is final and can only be challenged in court.
SASSA Update for Disability Grant Beneficiaries
The South African government has increased the SASSA grant amount on 1 April 2026 under the Financial Budget Act. This marks the second adjustment for the year, following the earlier
SASSA beneficiaries, including those receiving the Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, War Veterans Grant, and Care Dependency Grant, will now receive the higher amounts per month. The increase is intended to ease the rising cost of living and provide greater relief.
Further grant adjustments are expected in October 2026, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the social security system for vulnerable South Africans.
