To apply for a Sassa grant online you must register a new account to access SASSA services permitting you to complete your grant application.
- To register your account click on the SASSA services. https://services.sassa.gov.za
- Create your SASSA account by filling in the required details for the registration form.
- Enter your citizenship status as a South African Citizen/ Resident/ Asylum Seeker Refugee.
- Provide your South African Identity number (ID) or File number for verification. It also serves as your login username.
- Specify the type of ID document you have and Confirm your ID submission.
- ID Document: A valid South African ID book or smart ID card.
- Temporary ID: A certificate issued temporarily ID by the Department of Home Affairs if you don’t have a permanent identity.
- Choose your user title (Mr/Mrs/Miss) and provide your surname and full name.
- Enter your active South African phone number or provide your private email address.
- Choose a strong password for your SASSA account and confirm it.
- Click the “Register” button to complete your account registration process with an OTP verification.
Your SASSA account has been successfully registered. An OTP will be sent to your phone to confirm your registration. You can now continue to the application steps to apply for the social grant you need.
Steps for Sassa Online Application
- Log in to SASSA services with your account ID and password.
- Go to the ‘Apply for Social Grants’ tab in the options.
- Choose the type of SASSA grant for old age, disability, or child support.
- Complete the Sassa online application form with the required personal information and documents.
- A copy of your ID document (applicant’s identity card).
- Copy of your spouse’s ID (if applicable).
- Proof of marital status with a marriage certificate (if applicable).

- You can also change banking details for SASSA payments to switch your account.

- Agree to the SASSA terms and conditions for information provided in the Sassa grant application.
- Submit your completed Online grant application to SASSA.
Once your social grant application is approved, you will become a SASSA beneficiary for that grant and join the 28 million South Africans who receive social assistance.
You will start receiving your grant benefits from the month your application is approved, notified via SMS on your registered phone number.

Important Reminder for SASSA Grant Applicants
When requested, upload all required supporting documents. You can upload the signed bank form and certified affidavit separately, in PDF format only.
Ensure that your SASSA-generated affidavit form is certified by a commissioner of oaths, social worker, or Government school principal.
Foster families applying for foster care must provide a valid court order to qualify for monthly support from SASSA.
When Your Application is Approved for SASSA Payment
After Sassa finishes processing your online grant application, you’ll receive an SMS confirmation on your registered cellphone number. This could take up to 90 days. The SMS will inform you of the final status of your SASSA grant application approved, pending, or declined, along with the reasons. If your application is approved, your grant will be activated for monthly payments, available on scheduled SASSA payment dates.
SASSA Application Status Check
To check your application status, you can use the SASSA’s database online.
- Enter your ID and phone number for checking SASSA application status on SASSA’s website. https://sassas.co.za
- You can provide the South African ID or 13-digit bar coded document from your valid File number.
- Insert the registered mobile phone number used to apply for the SASSA grant application.
- Click on the Status Check button to view your application status online.
From SASSA’s database, you will receive the latest updates with SASSA Status online. If your application is still under review, the status will display as “pending.” Once processed, it will either be approved or declined, with the reasons provided.
Note: If your application is declined, you can file a SASSA appeal within 90 days of receiving the status results to request a review of your application.
Resolve Grant Application Pending Status
If your application status is pending with no details, it means SASSA has not yet processed your application and requires more time. If it shows pending for Sassa reapplication, it indicates crucial details are missing, such as bank information, phone number, or required documents like affidavits or medical reports. To address this, update your application with the correct details to proceed with grant processing.
- Note: Maintain your eligibility for the social grant by meeting SASSA requirements. Verify any changes in your circumstances during the monthly SASSA review, such as declaring your income or ensuring your bank balance remains within the specified limits of your applied grant.
Sassa Grant Application Declined
If your application for Sassa grant is declined, you can appeal through the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) for reconsideration. Submit your SASSA appeal within 30 days of receiving the rejection notification. The ITSAA will review your appeal for eligibility and circumstances. If approved, your declined application will be reinstated, and you’ll receive an SMS notification for approved payments within 90 days.
