SASSA child support grant: who qualifies and how to check your status

The child support grant is a monthly payment to the primary caregiver of a child under 18 who lives in South Africa. Status and payment dates can be checked online using your ID number and the phone number registered for the grant.

The child support grant is R580 per month for 2026/27. The amount and the income threshold are set in the national budget and can change; confirm current figures with SASSA. A Child Support Grant top-up is only available where SASSA confirms eligibility.
