SASSA Old Age Grant Beneficiaries Pay Challenges in May 2025

With the approaching payment dates, SASSA old age grant beneficiaries pay challenges in May 2025, unprecedentedly surprising recipients. Previously affected by Postbank system outages, they now face stricter ID verification implemented by SASSA. These hurdles require immediate attention from South Africa’s most vulnerable senior citizens to ensure timely access to crucial funds.

SASSA Old Age Grant Beneficiaries Pay Challenges in May 2025

The primary concern for the old age grant beneficiaries for May 2025 payments is the implementation of SASSA biometric verification starting 5 May 2025, which could delay scheduled payments beyond the usual timeframe and lead to grant reversals for those who fail ID verification on payment days.

This is particularly challenging for older persons grant beneficiaries who are elderly over 75 years of age, reside in care facilities, or are immobile due to health issues, including those admitted to hospitals, old age homes, or other healthcare institutions.

Beneficiaries of the older persons grant will face the following challenges during their scheduled May 2025 payment days, even if their application status is approved on the SASSA website.

Delayed SASSA Old Age Grant Payment Schedule for May

The disbursement of old age grants payment for May 2025 is scheduled to commence on Tuesday 6 May 2025, a week later than the usual payment dates of the 2nd or 3rd of the month. This delay may affect beneficiaries who rely on early payments for their monthly expenses.

SASSA’s Biometric Verification for Old Age Grant Beneficiaries

Starting 5 May 2025, SASSA will implement new biometric verification for SRD grant recipients, following the same process as for old age and other social grant beneficiaries.

Affected old age grant beneficiaries using alternative forms of identification, such as the green barcoded ID book instead of the standard 13-digit South African ID number, as well as those flagged for suspected fraud, inactive accounts, unauthorized phone number changes, or incorrect banking details, are required to complete SASSA verification.

To ensure successful grant payments, SASSA urges beneficiaries who receive verification notifications to complete biometric enrolment. Failure to do so may result in payment delays or grant suspension.

Potential Grant Reversals if Not Received on Grant Payment Days

Senior beneficiaries who fail to complete the required biometric identity verification may face SASSA grant reversals or suspensions. It is crucial for affected individuals to comply with the new verification process to ensure uninterrupted access to grant funds, as SASSA appeals will not be processed for those unidentified through SASSA’s identity verification.

Important Update for SASSA Beneficiaries

In a recent update, SASSA has confirmed that Gold Cards remain valid for grant payments in 2025, as the transition to Postbank Black Cards has been temporarily suspended following confirmation from the Parliament Committee.

SASSA advises beneficiaries to open bank accounts for grant payments and facilitates an online process, change banking details SASSA for beneficiaries to add new payment methods online for approved grants.
