Replace SASSA Gold Card with Postbank Black Card Before 31 May 2025

Replace SASSA Gold Card with Postbank Black Card Before 31 May 2025

SASSA and Postbank have officially extended the deadline to replace SASSA Gold Card with Postbank Black Card until 31 May 2025. This final extension gives beneficiaries two extra months (April and May) to avoid payment disruptions. After this date, Gold Cards will no longer be valid for ATM withdrawals, in-store purchases, or balance checks.

SASSA Confirms Deadline for Gold Card Replacement

The extension for SASSA Gold Cards was confirmed during the last media briefing on 28 March 2025 by Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe, who emphasized that this is the last opportunity to switch SASSA cards.

Beneficiaries now have more time to make the switch without disruptions to their social grant payments and continue using expired Gold Card until the end of May, after which they must use a Postbank Black Card or a bank account of their choice to receive SASSA grants.

We advise beneficiaries to check their monthly SASSA payment dates to receive approved grant funds on time. You can continue using your expired SASSA Gold Card for grant payments until 31 May 2025 to avoid any delays.

How to Replace Your SASSA Gold Card

To get your new Postbank Black Card, visit any Postbank office and participating retailer, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Boxer, Pick n Pay, or Spar. Bring your original South African ID (no copies or expired documents). You can also dial *120*355# to locate your nearest replacement station in your area.

The new Black Card works like the Gold Card, offering three free in-store withdrawals per month and free balance checks, with improved security features. Postbank officials advise SASSA beneficiaries not to use Post Offices for grant withdrawals unless they are asylum seekers with SASSSA R350 application or using a Mzansi Flexi account.

Have Not Received Your New Black Card

Some beneficiaries with verified SASSA status for social grants are still waiting for their Black Cards due to Postbank delays and a temporary suspension by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). If you haven’t received your Black Card, you can continue using your Gold Card until 31 May 2025.

The Parliamentary Committee on Social Development encourages beneficiaries to consider switching to a bank of their choice following the change banking details SASSA procedure (like Capitec, FNB, Nedbank, or Standard Bank) for easier and flexible choice to access social grant funds.

Important Announcement

Due to Postbank’s card issuing delays, many SASSA beneficiaries still rely on Gold Cards. Government of South Africa give reassurance and confirms there will be no disruption for those not yet migrated, but urges all beneficiaries to switch before 31 May 2025 to avoid missing any payments.
