SASSA Biometric ID Verification Starting 5 May 2025

The South African Social Security Agency has announced the implementation of mandatory SASSA biometric ID verification starting 5 May 2025 for all grant beneficiaries, addressing growing concerns over fraud and payment system vulnerabilities. The new verification process aims to secure grant payments, improve the integrity of the social grant system, and mitigate fraud linked to suspected deceased or inactive accounts.

SASSA Biometric ID Verification Starting 5 May 2025

Effective 5 May 2025, SASSA introduces mandatory biometric identity verification for certain grant recipients. This new electronic verification system targets individuals flagged for potential fraud or those using alternative identification, such as the green barcoded ID book, rather than the official 13-digit South African ID.

Grant beneficiaries meeting any of the following criteria must complete biometric enrolment to continue receiving their grants.

  1. Suspected fraudulent activity detected by the SASSA system
  2. Listed as a suspected victim of identity theft
  3. Use of alternative identification documents, such as green barcoded ID books
  4. Incorrect banking details or someone else’s bank account used
  5. Incorrect contact information or phone number changed to another person

SASSA Spokesperson Senzeni Ngubeni confirmed that biometric verification will begin on 5 May 2025, (a day before the old age grant payment date for 6 May 2025). All affected social grant beneficiaries, including those receiving the SRD grant, will be notified via SMS.

Recipients will receive a SASSA message prompting them to complete the identity verification provided with a secure link from SASSA website http://srd.sassa.gov.za/ or visit the local SASSA office in rural areas.

This updated electronic system aims to secure all grant types, including older persons, child support, disability, and SRD grants. While the process may be challenging for old age grant beneficiaries, it ensures accurate identity verification, helps prevent fraud, and reduces the risk of delayed payments.
